Aviation Program for High Schools

One of the key recommendations arising from the Vancouver Island Manufacturing Labour Market Project (http://harbourdigitalmedia.com/vimab/) was to enhance “support & promotion of regional manufacturers”. A number of possible ways to attract potential employees to the sector (and thereby address current and anticipated skill shortages) were put forward. One of these included “Providing more opportunities for secondary students to participate in pre-apprenticeship/apprenticeship training related to jobs in the sector”.

An excellent example of this industry / secondary school collaboration is already in place with the district wide “Aviation Program for High Schools”  based at Mt. Doug High School. The program is co-sponsored by Pacific Sky, Viking Air, Victoria Flying School & VI Helicopter’s Group. Curriculum includes courses in Aviation Design, Manufacturing, Systems and Pilot Training.

Enclosed is an audio link (https://youtu.be/R8nRRitJ_zc) with a student & instructor being interviewed about the program by the CBC. The future of industry & secondary school collaboration is alive & well on Lower Vancouver Island! 🙂

SBC meeting 10 Nov. 2016 – Terry Tarle, CEO – AXYS Technologies Inc.

Happy fall everyone although I don’t remember this much rain in October.  But, on a positive note, the November SBC meeting is just around the corner and we have the opportunity to hear again from another one of our local companies that last presented to our group in 2011.

The meeting this month will feature a talk given by Terry Tarle, CEO of AXYS Technologies Inc.  For those of you that have been in the area for some time, you will be well aware of the AXYS group of companies operating in our local community for the past 40 years.  It has always been interesting to me hearing from companies and people (with some history and experience) about how they are remaining successful by changing with the times.  This talk should provide another unique perspective on success.

Terry joined AXYS as President and CEO in Feb. 2014 from his post at Aeroinfo Systems (a Boeing company) in Richmond where he was Chief Operating Officer He was also the national director of Telus Geometrics and a senior vice president with Sierra Systems.  Most importantly to our community, he had previously founded a Victoria based high tech company which he led for 14 years. Terry, over the past 2 years is leading AXYS Technologies forward and will be talking to us today about “AXYS-APS -> Outside-In Product Development”.

Terry will describe the transformation of AXYS from an engineering-centric focus to a market-led, sales driven company that creates products that customers love.  He will use the company’s latest product, AXYS Analytics Portal Services (AXYS-APS), as a real world case study on how this new approach led to innovation and a significant market pull for this new product.
